The need

Why this, why now

For more than a year, surveying leaders across the country have been telling us the same thing. Most professional development available to our profession focuses on standards, technology and regulation. That work matters, and it is usually delivered in conference settings. But what makes or breaks a surveying company is often something else: whether the company is well run.

Whether leaders in the head office, the branch office and the smaller company are equipped to lead. Whether crew chiefs, supervisors and managers know how to build engaged, efficient teams in the field and in the office. Whether the people doing the work communicate well with each other and with clients. And whether gross margin and financial results are where they should be.

The PSC Learning Platform was built to meet that need. Developed with our partners Tradewinds Group and powered by Syllogi, it brings business, leadership, management, communication and financial training to Canadian surveying companies, designed around how surveying companies actually work.

A different kind of professional development

Two shifts in how we think about professional development

Surveyors→The whole company

From surveyors to the whole company

Professional development in our profession has mostly been for the licensed surveyor. But a company runs on everyone in it. The PSC Learning Platform is built for the people who lead crews, run projects, manage offices and keep the business moving, as well as the surveyors and owners who lead them. When everyone shares the same language for good work, the whole company gets stronger.

CPD credits→Company capability

From CPD credits to company capability

CPD credits matter, and courses are CPD-creditable for licensed surveyors. But in our experience, credits are the by-product, not the goal. The goal is a company that runs better: managers who develop their people, leaders who make good decisions close to the work, teams that communicate well, and owners who see their numbers clearly. Every lesson ends with a practical tool that learners can put to work that week.

Who it’s for

Built for everyone who makes the company work

Owners and CEOs

See the business clearly, plan with intent, and build a company that doesn’t need you for every decision.

Branch managers and senior surveyors

Lead with clarity and make good decisions close to the work.

Project managers and supervisors

Build engaged, efficient teams through delegation, coaching and the conversations that drive performance.

Crew chiefs and party chiefs

Lead a field crew with confidence: clear expectations, good handoffs, respectful feedback.

Drafting, CAD and technical leads

Develop the people coming up behind you and hand work off well.

Office managers and administrative staff

Communicate with skill across the team and with clients, and see how your work creates value.

Every employee

Understand how the company makes money and where your work fits.

The platform

What the platform delivers

Stand-alone courses and connected Learning Paths across five areas, with new content added regularly. Every piece is grounded in the economics of surveying companies. Courses are taught by Cher Cunningham and Jim Pelot of Tradewinds Group, joined by vetted guest instructors such as Olivia of Peninsula HR Canada.

Business

Planning, operations, finance and the way the company creates value.

Leadership

The identity, judgment, values and communication of a company leader.

Management

Motivation, delegation, coaching, rhythm and the conversations that drive performance.

Personal Development

Communication, strengths and the interpersonal skills beneath good work.

Wealth

Canadian tax and wealth strategy for owners and employees.

For the smaller company

A way through what Jim Pelot calls the Doldrums: the point where a company has outgrown its original design and everything feels harder than it used to.

For the larger company

Consistent management and leadership capability at every branch, so good decisions get made close to the work, not all at head office.

Canadian throughout

Including the tax and wealth content that most American material doesn’t cover.

Learning Paths, courses, who each one is for, and how companies use them.

What sets it apart

Why invest in the PSC Learning Platform

There are other learning platforms and other management courses. We don’t know of another that does these three things at once.

01

Built for Canadian surveying companies

The economics, roles, regulatory context and tax framework are calibrated to surveying practice, not generic professional services.

02

A connected system, not a library

Learning Paths connect end to end, so learners come away with a way of running their part of the company, not a folder of certificates.

03

Proprietary frameworks, practical tools, PSC credibility

Developed by Cher Cunningham and Jim Pelot of Tradewinds Group with vetted guest instructors, built by Syllogi, and delivered in partnership with Professional Surveyors Canada.

The invitation

Become an Inaugural Funding Member

PSC is inviting leading surveying companies to fund the PSC Learning Platform, so that it is supported by the companies most interested in developing their people. When a platform is funded by the companies who benefit most from it, that shows real industry commitment to members, to employees and to the next generation of surveying leaders.

The PSC Learning Platform is PSC’s CPD program, and the only CPD that PSC provides, so funding it is an investment in the profession’s professional development as a whole.

Every Inaugural Funding Member is represented on the Senior Leaders Advisory Committee, is consulted regularly on course needs and content, and gets an early view of courses in development. Course development and the platform are well underway, and we hope to welcome a strong founding group this fall.
